What to expect at the Museum of FIT?
Highly recommend visiting this free museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology! There were two open floors with various rooms to explore and all specific to fashion. When I visited in April 2023, there were two exhibits on display: Designing Women: Fashion Creators and Their Interiors and Fresh, Fly, and Fabulous: Fifty Years of Hip-Hop Style. The Museum of Fashion Institute of Technology has no museum entrance fees so it’s always great to pop in every few months to see what’s on display! I know I’ll definitely be back to check out their upcoming exhibits.
Exhibits I Saw During My Visit:
The Designing Women: Fashion Creators and Their Interiors
The exhibit I visited was truly fascinating. It highlighted the fact that fashion goes beyond just reflecting one’s personality through clothing. It showed how fashion can have an impact on and influence interior design as well. I enjoyed seeing the evolution of couture fashion throughout the years and how it found itself in many designer homes, salons, ateliers, and more. It went to show women had more influence in just fashion and making fashionable statements, that they can also bridge the gap and design homes, salons, ateliers, and more. This exhibit showcased ~70 different garments from the museum’s permanent collection alongside photographic images influenced by influential female designers from the last century. You can expect to see designs from Coco Chanel, Jeanne Lanvin, Valentina Schlee, and more.
Fresh, Fly, and Fabulous: Fifty Years of Hip-Hop Style
Out of all the hip-hop exhibits I have experienced, I must say that this one stood out the most to me because it highlighted the significant impact of hip-hop on fashion. As you walk through the exhibit it takes you through the birth of Hip Hop in the Bronx and as time progresses the differences between the coast-to-coast fashions and their impact on mainstream media
There are over 100 garments and accessories including Cardi B’s custom bedazzled acrylic nails, 90’s hip hop fashion and its takeover into luxury brands, the usage of mentioning brand names to showcase ones taste in fashion through their song, allowing Hip Hop artists to further expand their reach in audiences by partnering and/or creating their own lines of fashion e.g. suits, designer purses, and even their own fashion brand labels such as Jay Z’s Rocawear, FUBU, and Sean Jean and more recently with Rihanna’s latest empire Fenty in makeup and lingerie and being one of the first true all-inclusive brands.
